When towing a trailer or caravan, a well-fitted towbar is essential. Safety is a paramount consideration, as is compliance with relevant legislation with regards to towing. It is also imperative that the type of towbar fitted is suitable for the weight and type of load to be towed. Towbar systems must be type-approved to the specific make, model and year of vehicles first used after the 1st August 1998.
Towbars are attached directly to the chassis of the towing vehicle and incorporate a socket for the electrical systems, ensuring that the lights and indicators on the towed vehicle are fully operative. Simple towbars bolt permanently to the vehicle, whilst detachable towbars are also available for those who tow infrequently.
A range of additional accessories are also available for towbar systems. Spacers may be fitted to leave additional room between the towing vehicle and the load, and these may incorporate additional racks to enable cycles to be carried easily and safely. Towing systems may also incorporate bumper guards and stabilisers for additional peace of mind.
