Many years ago the electrical system of a car was only used for starting the engine and operating devices such as headlights, wipers and perhaps a radio. Modern cars, however, have a wide range of accessories such as electric windows, heated seats and cruise control. In spite of this, the three main components of the electrical system remain the same. They are the battery, the starter motor and the alternator.
The car operates as a closed circuit system with a 12 volt battery functioning as the power source. The battery is used to start the engine and also provides extra electricity when the alternator is unable to fully meet demand. The starter unit cranks the engine using power from the battery when the key is turned in the ignition. If either of these parts is faulty, then your car may have problems starting. The alternator generates electricity when the engine is running and, when working correctly, will recharge the battery and help to provide power for the electrical systems operating in your car.
